Plasters and Wound Dressings

Plasters and wound dressings are an essential item in any first aid kit. We know them as adhesive plasters, medical plasters, band aids and even by brand name. They are small, self-contained medical dressings for minor injuries and wounds, usually designed to stop bleeding and protect the wound from infection. By protecting the wound, the plaster allows the body to heal it faster. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit different applications.

How to apply plasters and wound dressings

  • Wash your hands with hot water and soap or use sterilising gel before dressing any wound.
  • Clean and dry the affected area. Use antiseptic if required.
  • Remove the plaster from its sterile, sealed covering.
  • Carefully peel back the covers to expose the non-adhesive pad of the plaster.
  • Use the covers to avoid touching the adhesive if possible, as this reduces its effectiveness.
  • Place the non-adhesive absorbent pad over the wound, remove the covers and fix it in position with the adhesive tabs.
  • Avoid stretching the plaster or applying tension to the skin around the wound.
